Satya Sai Baba caught in British controversy

Satya Sai Baba, one of India's best known spiritual leaders, has triggered a fresh controversy in Britain after association with The Duke of Edinburgh's Award charity involving young people.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a London-headquartered charity whose patron is Prince Philip.

It gives three kinds of awards (bronze, silver and gold) to anyone aged between 14-25 for achievements in four categories: community service, skills, physical recreation and expeditions. Each year it is estimated that over 2,25,000 youngsters vie for the honour in Britain alone.

This year, when the charity celebrates its 50th year, it has chosen to send about 200 young volunteers to India to work with the Sri Satya Sai Organisation.

However, the feat, pulled off by Sai Youth UK, a division of the parent body, has created a furore. Several people, including some of the Satya Sai Baba's former Western disciples, questioned the decision in view of the mixed reputation the godman enjoys. Sai's devotees deny the allegations.

The Guardian was the first to raise its voice saying the award scheme had chosen as its accredited partner a spiritual group "whose 'living god' founder has been accused of sexually abusing young boys".

Satya Sai Baba hit bad press in Britain two years ago when a BBC programme, The Secret Swami, interviewed young Western disciples who alleged that the godman had sexually coerced them.

The Guardian quoted Tom Sackville, a former Home Office minister and chairman of Fair, a cult-watching and victim support group, as saying: "It is appallingly naive for the award scheme to involve young people and the royal family with an organisation whose leader is accused of paedophilia. Parents who plan to send their children on this pilgrimage... should be aware of the danger their children are being exposed to."

The daily also said Michael Gave, a conservative MP, planned to write to the charity to say it should monitor the organisations they chose as partners more strictly.

"As a society we need a more determined effort to identify and expose those religious cults and extremists that pose a direct threat to people, so that they do not enjoy patronage that should be directed elsewhere," he was quoted as saying.

In the 1990s, when Prince Charles visited India, he had expressed a desire to visit the Sai Baba but was quietly dissuaded by the British Embassy in New Delhi.

Since The Guardian's article, it was reported that there was mounting pressure on the charity to distance itself from the Sai group.

However, charity spokesperson Shona Taylor did not answer repeated queries as to whether the volunteers had left for India and how they could be contacted.

  • I read it thoroughly and several times. It is absolutely a BULL SHIT. I am a 25 years old "beautiful" girl from India. I am with Sai since 5 long years but I have never experienced even a small pinch of whatever you are saying. I can proudly say that staying around him, I lost so many bad habits and behaviours without being noticed. A frog in the swamp doesn't know that a lotus is blooming right upon his head. It is the bee who tirelessly flies to find it to get its nectar. The moral: Don't croak down there from the muddy waters, come outside and experience the truth. Get the experience from the real man

  • And the fact that you have not experienced such things has convinced you that this is all bullshit. How terribly arrogant. That is really like a blind man denying the existence of the sun just because he cannot see it.

And, no offence Anon, but I wonder why you would even experience such things since you are female, and the Baba's appetite is apparently for males?

Believe me, I've heard all that frog-in-the-swamp rationale tons of times in the ten years I spent as a devotee of Sai Baba. I also noticed my bad habits disappearing - but so what? Being a disciple of any guru leads one to practice their teachings and eliminate bad habits thereof, there is no reason to believe that this is something unique to Sai Baba.

It's really amazing to hear the same old things being regurgitated by devotees even after Sai Baba's fraud is apparent and the old man is being wheeled around in a wheelchair with a six-years-overdue Golden Age waiting to happen..

  • Michael Jackson was first... then now you guys are after Sai Baba... guess you westerners "Wont stop till... till they get enough..."

Same thing you guys did to Jesus when he was alive and now to Sai Baba... I mean its ridiculous when you can get what you want... you cry like a baby... when u get what you want... you adore it with passion over your head....

just beware... whether is Sai Baba or any kinda of Guru... they are doing their best to keep everyone from harms way...

if you're destroying anything... it will be just yourself... People are not so naive to accept what you say when you have no proof... and even if you have proof... there are 10000000001 things to worry about in this world..... mainly starting with your own selfs....

cant people leave others alone... just do ur own duty and leave the investigation to others....

    =)

wonder where your 10 years were.... if ur such a 10 year old devotee... you must have been delusional... u must have not indulged yourself in any form of service....

    anyway ... adios...

  • Well, you can always expect Sai devotees to turn up with bad spelling and bad grammar. Not to mention half-baked platitudes and not-very-well-thought-out arguments in "support" of Sai Baba. :-)

Oh yes, and ALWAYS put down the writer and minimize their years and contributions as a unswervingly loyal Sai devotee always. :-)

Such a great example of Sai Baba's teachings on love, compassion, brotherhood, etc etc etc. This itself gives you a clue where all those platitudes go. Down the drain. :-)

  • Any one who has seen the YouTube video shot where Sai Baba takes a chain from his assistant before waving his hand to "miraculously" create a necklace can easily make out that he is a fraud.

When I went through a story in one of the pages of this blogger where there is a mention of a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba who got powers to produce sweets and later lost it and could produce vibhuti ( as per a command from Shirdi Sai), we could probably say that Sathya Sai as a young boy when he was deeply religious and devoted to Shirdi Sai, also got this power of producing sweets and later holy ash.

But later on when people showed lot of respect for him and he started getting egoistic he might have lost it completely. But he could not tell the world that way and had to hide it.

Subsequently he started doing magic to cover it up and seemingly "materialised" all sorts of things including necklace, wrist watch etc., which were pure trickery. He also started exploiting gullible people by indulging in sexual acts and thereby reducing his spiritual powers completely. Ever since he lost his devotion to Shirdi Sai and became arrogant he might have lost the power endowed upon him.

This is just my theory which could be true.
